NB: $4.2 million in tenders awarded for NBCC Moncton

[MONCTON, NB] - The first tenders have been awarded for $20 million in infrastructure upgrades at the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC), Moncton campus. Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty made the announcement on Monday. 

Tenders valued at $1.9 million were awarded to Avondale Construction for roof and window replacements; demolition in preparation for an addition to the existing building; and construction of a 173-sq.-metre (1,861-sq.-foot) storage building. A second roof contract was awarded to Réjean Richard Roofing for $1.3 million.
A $997,000 contract has been awarded to Birch Hill Construction Ltd. for the creation of a parking lot to accommodate construction of the new building and for future use by the increased number of students who will attend the campus.

“Our government has committed to an investment of $1.2 billion in strategic infrastructure projects over the next two years,” said Doherty. “Shovels are hitting the ground on projects such as this one throughout the province. New Brunswickers will see economic benefits, and they will benefit from improved government services in these new and improved facilities.”

Overall, the project includes the creation of 4,000 sq. metres (43,040 sq. feet) of training space, which will house programs in civil engineering technology, electrical engineering technology, information technology and business administration. “This is an important step in increasing NBCC student capacity and making the connection between our post-secondary education system and our province’s changing labour market needs as we move to be self-sufficient by 2026,” said Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour Minister Donald Arseneault. “By investing in infrastructure at the Moncton campus, we are looking after students and ensuring that they have access to the best possible learning environment. We are also moving forward with Be Inspired. Be Ready. Be Better. The Action Plan to Transform Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick.”

As part of the provincial government’s Green Buildings Program, the new space is being designed to achieve a silver rating under Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), a rating system used by industry to measure green building performance in Canada. The upgrades being made to the existing facility will improve energy efficiency, building code compliance, and the general aesthetics. 

The improvements on the campus are scheduled for completion in the spring of 2011.
