NS: Estabrooks “damn angry” about donations changes

[HALIFAX, NS] — Bill Estabrooks accepts he has to slash his donations spending, but he isn’t happy about it.
“To put it to you candidly it makes me real damn angry,” said the NDP cabinet minister yesterday.
Estabrooks was the most generous giver amongst MLAs. He spent $29,750 on donations and gifts over the 12 months before the June election, more than any other member. He also spent $14,674 on advertising.
That will have to end after the internal economy board decimated advertising spending limits to about $400 per month — one-tenth of the previous maximum. Another $1,050 fund was cut altogether.
“I’m frustrated, I’m disappointed, but I’ll do as I’m told,” Estabrooks said. “I’ve got to live with the decision that was made, that’s the bottom line.”
He said the recipients of his donations included church groups, sports teams and needy constituents. He mentioned one case where he helped a single mother afford to enroll her kids in hockey and gymnastics.
“I guess I can’t help her out anymore. That’s the way it goes,” he said.
Estabrooks’ most controversial advertising was to have a junior hockey team wear “Bill MLA” on the backs of its jerseys. He said he was hurt by accusations of vote buying, and said that was never his intention.
The practice of MLAs using their expense accounts to donate to charities has come under the microscope since the auditor general’s report last month. Scott Hennig, president of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said the spending was inappropriate. This week former speaker Art Donahoe, who is charged with crafting the new rules around MLA expenses, is also skeptical of community donations.
“I think that’s very laudible,” he said this week. “What I’m not certain, though, is whether they should come out of the public purse.”
Donahoe’s recommendations include banning any “word, initial, colour or device” that links an MLA to a political party in constituency advertisements.

If you are so damn angry spend it out of your own pocket and not ours!! How much did you spend of your personal salary on these charitable donations in relation to what you spent from public coffers? Are the figures as generous when its YOUR money? Are you the “highest donator of all MLA’s” when its your own cash and not ours?! You sicken me,. And now you are going to talk down to us?!! You are going to pseudo-intellectuallize us in to thinking you’ve been right in what you’ve all been doing?! You really do think your constituents are stupid don’t you? That much is clear.. You honestly think that you have that elected position because you are smarter than we are? Better than us?!!
I have news for you, Sonny.
It’s over!
Heads will roll. Thanks for sticking your neck out.!! I hope yours is one of the first. It’s hard for us to know who the scummiest of the scum are unless they step forward.
No matter what good intentions you pretend to have, the fact is that you are hoping to build votes, and to take unfair electoral advantage with this spending of money which “we the people” do NOT authorize you to spend!
Get it through your thick heads !! Who do you think you are?! Robin Hood?! The theiving days are over!! You and all your cronies who got in the politics for the “perks” can form a single file line and march out the door. ( Into a firey hell-hole for all I care.) Those in office who realize the game is over should be charged criminally for their theft and given the opportunity to serve the punishment any other Canadian would have to serve serve for this type of fraud against the government of Canada. The people of Canada have had enough!. And none of you at any level should be exempt!
And those like you, who continue to battle, argue, deny, manipulate and attempt to cloak yourself in the veil of a victim, (if it were up to me), would be HUNG outside the parliament buildings for all to see that a crime against the people is even more severe a crime than murder!.
Your arrogant attitude is what is going to bring all of you thieving vultures down!
My kingdom for one honest man!!
Estabrooks inability to understand why taxpayers’ money is not “his” money no matter how blinded he is with his own righteousness shows so clearly why he does not have the intelectual intelligence or maturity to be a Cabinet minister making decisions on taxpayers behalf.
Amazing!!! Estabrooks is ticked because all the sudden he can’t give away money that isn’t his to give away in the first place and he must now be accountable.
This is nothing more than vote buying and if you really are sincere go ahead and donate from your own pockets not ours! Things really need to be cleaned up and I am quite sure a lot of eyebrows will be raised over these so called expenses.
Couldn’t agree more guys, this man is a real class act. He wants to be such a great guy then let him put his hand in his own pockets and not ours, that’s how we donate !!
Can’t wait until the 4 years are up, then the people will speak.
I actually thought that things would be better with a change of government. Events have proven that it wasn’t a realitic goal.
We all have lots to say when things go wrong as we see one politician after another take advantage of the ‘public purse.’ Perhaps more of us who perceive ourselves as having better ideals should become politicians. Talk is cheap.
These guys simply don’t seem to understand that the taxpayers expect them to follow normal business practices. When government money gets spent, it is done by going through an approval process, and then a cheque is issued. We have an EMO program to help people with “emergencies” so if an MLA has a constituent that has an
emergency then he/she should use that EMO agency to deal with it according to a common set of rules. Having every MLA do their own thing doesn’t help the “system” stay in touch with what’s going on and then they can better plan for ALL emergencies. We have our “welfare”system as well that could have a fund for such people as seniors needing help. As for Estabrooks using tax money to have his name on hockey shirts, that is plain wrong. Every business runs all it’s expenses through the books, and so should every MLA . There is just no excuse today for hundreds of thousands being spent as “cash”. I’d agree to giving them a credit card cause at least that way there’s a paper trail. The NDP has shown a serious flaw in their thinking when it comes to managing money, so now we have Steele looking to raise taxes before he even tried to look for waste or questionable spending .
