[HALIFAX, NS] — The Province of Nova Scotia has introduced changes it says will save time and money for licensed establishments.
New regulations, now in effect, have been developed following consultation with stakeholder groups, as well as the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board.
The amendments to the liquor licensing regulations include:
• Streamlining the application process, including reducing the amount of information and steps to obtain approval for changes to entertainment.
• Helping to reduce wait times for new applicants.
• Adding a new class of special occasion license to provide temporary extensions of licensed premises in a timely and cost effective manner.
Luc Erjavec, vice president, Atlantic Canada, Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association, is pleased with the recent action, saying it’s a move which reduces red tape for the industry.
“This is a good first step and we look forward to continuing to work with the province to address the issues facing businesses in Nova Scotia,” he says.
The amendments will reduce the administrative burden of the utility and review board and provide better clarity about procedures and responsibilities.

Comments:
This is a positive move in support of small business and those who have to deal with the provincial government on this issue. The previous government made it extremely difficult for anyone to deal effectively within the process to gain a liquor license then when they could not handle it anymore shifted the responsibility to the URB.
The URB did what they could given their expertise and time. We had well qualified and experienced civil servants within government and the process worked, except for some officials who just liked to meddle to justify their existence.
Well done and let’s hope this new group, working with the new rules and the URB are left alone to do their job.
