The school board representative for the towns of Stellarton and Westville, Ron Marks, said samples from the roof were cut from the building and were then examined by consultants who said that it was not the problem.
Repair work had been done on the roof recently, but the consultants said it cured properly and did not appear to be an issue, Marks said.
Some items have been cleared from the building including mats and additional tests are being done. Some more mould spores were found but were deemed minor.
He said (May 15) the investigation is ongoing.
Until they know more, he said the plan is still for students to return to the school in the fall.
“There have been no decisions made on that until we find out exactly what we’re dealing with here,” he said.
The school board’s ultimate goal is to fix the problem and have the children return, he said.
“Having said that we have to be cautious and ensure the safety of the children and teachers in that building,” he said. “We have to do right and we have to be assured it’s safe to go back.”
