The (Newfoundland & Labrador) Department of Transportation and Works issued an advisory on April 25, noting that blasting will take place up to four times per day at the site adjacent to the hospital, and will continue until the end of June.

Residents in the area have been notified by the contractor and communications are ongoing with officials at Carbonear General Hospital to ensure staff are always notified in advance of blasting activity, the advisory stated.

The 18,500 square metre, four story, 250-bed long-term care facility will have space for recreation therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and worship. It is expected to be ready for its first residents in late 2014 or early 2015.

Even though the neighborhood will have to deal with noise for a few weeks, the end result will be a much needed assisted living facility that should enhance the neighborhood. As a baby boomer, I am dealing with caring for my father, who is living in an assisted living facility. I am grateful that the city where we live, gave me many facilities to choose from. Many more quality facilities are needed, and one located near a hospital is a plus.
