Const. Sam Munden of the Bay St. George RCMP said the driver was fortunate to have escaped injury by exiting the truck before receiving any burns.
There was extensive damage under the hood and to the cab of the truck, owned by Johnson’s Construction in Corner Brook.
RCMP received the call at 9:50 a.m. Monday and traffic was temporarily halted while firefighters extinguished the blaze that occurred about one-kilometre east of Route 490 on the Trans-Canada Highway. Munden said motorists are reminded in the event of a vehicle fire there is a need to act quickly, but cautiously. He said fires in vehicles spread extremely fast, so time to act is a big factor.
“Pull over to the side of the road as quickly and as safely as possible and exit the vehicle in a quick and safe manner,” he advised.
