Repairs will soon begin on the Main Gut Bridge, located along Route 490 in Stephenville Crossing. That's according to a press release issued by the provincial (Newfoundland & Labrador) government this week (May 4).

Work will include the removal of the concrete handrails and the installation of steel rails, bridge curbs will be resurfaced and existing asphalt will be removed.

Any necessary repairs to the bridge deck will be carried out before repaving, and traffic flow will be maintained with one open lane throughout the project.

“This is an important piece of infrastructure that connects our communities and these improvements will benefit residents in the Bay St. George region,” said Joan Burke, MHA for St. George’s–Stephenville East, in the release.

Dave Kane, a Stephenville Crossing resident who spearheaded a campaign for the bridge repairs, declined comment on the upcoming work when contacted earlier this week.
