The winning bid from Land and Sea Welding Limited will see the company performing deck reinforcement work on the Sir Ambrose Shea Bridge.

The bridge currently has a 13,000 kilogram weight restriction in place, which will remain for the duration of the construction work.

The bridge will be reduced to one lane during the work, with closures expected to be kept to the shortest possible times, according to a Department of Transportation and Works news release.

Once the repair work is completed the bridge capacity will be restored to 25,000 kilograms for tandem vehicles and 37,000 kilograms for combination vehicles.

The government is planning to replace the lift bridge, said Felix Collins, MHA for Placentia-St. Mary’s and minister of justice.

“I look forward to the completion of the repairs, and to moving forward with a tender for the construction of a new bridge,” he said.

To ensure compliance with this weight restriction, the Department of Transportation and Works installed a 24-hour video surveillance camera at the bridge that is capable of licence plate recognition for enforcement purposes.
