Home inspectors in Newfoundland and Labrador are currently not required to be government licenced, something opposition MHA Randy Edmunds wants to see changed.

Edmunds said it is important for home owners to have qualified and professional home inspections conducted prior to their home purchase, something that does not always happen, according to a Liberal news release.

“Home inspectors in this province are not required to be licenced and anyone can call themselves one without proper training and qualifications,” said Edmunds. “We have heard of consumers buying homes and getting saddled with a house that is full of deficiencies, including mould, because a proper inspection was not completed.”

British Columbia and Alberta have both introduced mandatory licencing of home inspectors, with Quebec preparing to introduce similar legislation, said Edmunds.

“I would encourage the Minister of Service Newfoundland and Labrador to have his department immediately undertake the preparation of such legislation in our province,” said Edmunds.

According to Edmunds, the Canadian Association of Home and Property Inspectors have been lobbying the government for years to regulate their profession.
