Coun. Sharron Byers initiated a resolution to hire local people and companies through a process that could assist local businesses in the bidding process for local contract work.

The town's solicitor, John Rafferty, said although the parameters of the resolution are not completely clear yet, assistance to local-based companies could come in the form of providing education on how to make a successful contract presentation.

"I doubt it would be monetary help," added Rafferty.

Coun. Brian Kinsman added while the resolution is a good idea, he wanted to ensure the town wouldn't miss out on other relevant opportunities.

"Nobody is opposed to hire local but does it restrict services ... and create problems with provincial" based services, Kinsman asked.

Town CAO Jim Langille added that a project that is valued at more than $10,000 would be open to all province-based companies, guaranteeing them equal opportunity.

Council will send a letter about the resolution to the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities for further discussion and direction.
