“We are in the last stages of design and approval prior to issuing the tender,” said Vicki Harnish, Vice-President of Corporate Services, South Shore Health. “We hope to have all the documentation finalized and be in a position to issue the tender in the coming weeks.”

The Queens General Health project will upgrade and modernize the hospital’s existing 22 bed medical unit and build a new collaborative healthcare facility.  The medical unit construction will include private washrooms for every patient, technological and structural improvements to provide for quality patient care, and quiet spaces for patients and families. With a collaborative healthcare centre on site, Queens will offer a new approach to family practice with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers working together under one roof to deliver services to the sick, promote preventative healthcare, and manage chronic illnesses.

In addition to enhancing the quality of care offered to the residents of Queens, and the District as a whole, this project will also provide a positive environment for teaching health care professionals and create new opportunities to host medical, nursing and other health professional students.

Once issued the tender will remain open for 30 days before submissions undergo a review process. Construction is expected to begin this summer with completion of the project in the fall of 2014.
