Scott Conway, father of Shayna Conway, recently travelled from Ontario to Prince Edward Island to volunteer on a Habitat for Humanity build for his family.
Scott, a contractor in Ottawa, brought his own trailer loaded with tools and equipment.
Habitat P.E.I. says, sometime between July 25 and 26, Conway's trailer was broken into at the build site on Buell Road in Mermaid. It's estimated that $3,000 worth of hand and power tools were taken.
Last December, 21-year-old Tabitha Stepple and Islanders Mitch MacLean, 20, and Tanner Craswell, 22, were killed when a gunman opened fire on their vehicle along Highway 2 in Claresholm, Alta. The shooter, Stepple's ex-boyfirend Derek Jensen, then turned the gun on himself.
Shayna, who was also a passenger in the vehicle, was seriously wounded in the attack but has since returned home to P.E.I.
The Habitat build received a contribution from Rodd Hotels and Resorts in order to build Conway's family a new home.
Shayna and her brother and sister will be living in the new home with their mother, Sheri Wade.
Habitat P.E.I. is asking the public to keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell Scott Conway's tools, and ask that neighbours in the area keep a look out for suspicious activity.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Stratford RCMP.
This is the second such incident at a Habitat site. Two years ago, tools were stolen from a construction project in Summerside.
The organization says the "Rodd House for Shayna and Family" will continue as scheduled, with a build beginning July 28.
