TOPIC: Choosing the ‘host with the most’

(Originally published in the May 2012 issue of the Nova Scotia Business Journal - "Conferences & Conventions" special advertising feature)

Every event has its own unique audience. That’s why finding the right emcee is crucial for success.

“To ensure a seamless event, it’s important to choose an emcee who is a natural fit for your particular crowd,” says Kim George, president of LimeLight Group.

The more information you have about potential emcees, the better. First, find out which groups they have worked with in the past, view their web clips and always ask for testimonials.

To ensure your event runs smoothly, select a professional, experienced emcee. It’s vital to have an expert who can handle hiccups and make them disappear.

Really know your budget as well. A celebrity host, for example, is a great way to boost attendance but remember the cost will be higher. Fees can range exponentially. The majority of professional emcees range from $2,500 to $7,500, while a celebrity emcee might be $20,000 or more. Also, be prepared to pay a 50 per cent deposit to secure an emcee for a particular date.

Finally, always ensure your emcee reviews the agenda and script in advance.

“As the event unfolds, an emcee should be a critical part of the time management team working behind the scenes to keep things running according to plan,” says George.
