[YARMOUTH, NS] — Three people have been charged in connection with the seizure of what DFO says was thousands of illegal-sized lobsters in Yarmouth County.
Charged are Earl Patrick Boudreau, 48, of Wedgeport; Dennis Joseph Clairmont, 59, of Plymouth; and Jamie Fitzgerald, 38, of Yarmouth.
The charges they face include possessing illegal-sized lobster and possessing female lobster with eggs attached.
The charges stem from the seizure last Friday morning of over 6,000 lobsters in Comeau’s Hill.
According to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, 6,222 illegal lobsters were seized. A truck also was seized.
DFO initially had estimated that around 4,000 lobsters had been seized.
The lobsters, which DFO says were stored in about two-dozen holding cages and crates, were taken to the DFO building in Tusket, where they were counted.
The lobsters were released back in the water.
Given the number of lobsters involved, a DFO spokesman described the seizure as “very significant.”
