[ST. JOHN'S, NL] - The first cruise ship of the season will arrive in St. John's May 13, bringing 1,150 visitors to the harbourfront.

The Crystal Cruises luxury-class ship Crystal Serenity will be in port 2-7 p.m. according to a City of St. John's news release.

After departing New York City on May 8, the ship made calls to ports in Newport and Boston, with other stops including Iceland before a final destination of Dover, England on May 24.

The arrival of the ship heralds the beginning of tourism season, with Mayor Dennis O'Keefe looking forward to seeing more visitors on city streets.

"The economic benefits of having these large cruise ships come to St. John's are undeniable and that is why we actively promote the City as a tourism destination and port of call for cruise ships," he said.

This season, 16 cruise ships are expected to visit St. John's, bringing 25,000 passengers and crew.
