[ST. JOHN'S, NL] — The agency that regulates Newfoundland and Labrador's offshore energy sector has issued a warning to a company that conducted seismic testing in an active fishing area.

The Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board issued a statement Thursday saying the MV Sanco Spirit, a seismic vessel operated by Multi Klient Invest AS, had been spotted June 6 pulling a seismic probe off northeastern Newfoundland.

The board says it investigated and later issued a notice of non-compliance to the company.

Last week, the largest fisherman's union in Newfoundland accused the company of interfering with the province's shrimp fishery.

The Fish, Food and Allied Workers union accused the company of conducting seismic surveys on shrimp fishing grounds, contrary to a schedule it submitted to authorities.

Union president Earle McCurdy said the company's license should have been revoked.
