[AMHERST, NS] — To find out what the real challenges are in agriculture today, you need to talk to farmers, said PC Agriculture Critic Chuck Porter.
Porter visited farms throughout Cumberland County recently to get the opinions of farmers in what needs to change in the agriculture market.
“If you’re going to do your best to make policies for agriculture you need to be able to talk to the people who know best, and that’s famers.”
Among the stops Porter made was Malcolm Logan’s cranberry farm, where Logan showed Porter his crop and irrigation system and talked about the difficulty with prices.
“I have no problem getting volume. But the price probably won’t go up again for another three years, so all I can do is wait and see,” Logan said.
Porter says that many problems facing farmers are the fault of the recent rise in energy costs.
“We need to find a way to create a sustainable energy in this province. We’re all for green energy, but it has to be done in a way that is affordable.,” said Porter. “Just think about how much your home bill has gone up, and then think of a guy like Malcolm Logan who’s trying to run his business.”
Porter also made stops at JP Farm Equipment, North Shore Soils, and John Walderboss’s Dairy Farm.
