[Slemon Park, PEI] - The Province (Prince Edward Island) announced the construction of two new roundabouts, including one at the entrance to Slemon Park.

Prince Edward Island’s new intersection design for Pooles Corner features a dual lane roundabout that will slow traffic and reduce collision severity.

Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Minister Robert Vessey said Thursday (March 15) that the construction of the roundabouts - the second one being at Pooles Corner - is going to result in improved safety and efficiency for Island drivers.

"Islanders have come to appreciate the improved safety roundabouts can provide," claimed Vessey. "The construction of new roundabouts at Pooles Corner and on Route 2 at the entrance to Slemon Park, will slow traffic and reduce the severity of collisions at these busy intersections."

The approximate value of the road construction tenders announced Thursday is $5.6 million.

In total, the Province plans to invest approximately $38 million in road and bridge construction this year, as outlined in the 2012-2013 Capital Budget.

Other projects included in this round of tenders include:

• Resurfacing of 2.5 kilometres on Route 2 in Travellers Rest

• Resurfacing of 1 kilometre on Route 1A in Ross Corner

• Resurfacing of 2.2 kilometres on Route 2 in Brookfield/Greenvale

• Resurfacing of 1.3 kilometres on Route 2 (Malpeque Road) in Charlottetown

• Full reconstruction of 800 metres on Route 4 in Murray River

The Slemon Park and Route 2 Travellers Rest projects have received funding through the Canada - P.E.I. New Deal for Cities and Communities Community Fund, which is managed by the P.E.I. Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal.

"As we get closer to construction season, the Province will announce more projects for completion in 2012," said Vessey. "I'm confident the work that will be completed this year will go a long way toward improving safety for all Island drivers."
